5S Lean Methodology, Strategy & Planning

5S is a systematic way of organising and managing workspaces to improve efficiency by eliminating waste, improving flow and reducing the number of processes where possible. It is called 5S because of the five steps:

  1. SORT Remove unnecessary items from the workplace
  2. SET Create a place for everything and put everything in its place
  3. SHINE Clean and make the workspace safe, waste free and productive
  4. STANDARDISE Standardise and provide training
  5. SUSTAIN Monitor and improve (repeat)

In this workshop, participants will learn the 5S and how to implement it as a strategy in their organisation. 5S relies heavily on visual management principles and ensures that work areas support the overall goals of safety, quality and efficiency. 5S is a core, foundational tool of implementing continuous improvement and helps create discipline, teamwork, ownership of areas and remove some of the existing frustrations. It builds engagement as visually, participants see work areas change.
